Roche Harbor

Roche Harbor is located on the north side of San Juan Island in Washington State, approximately 25-minutes drive from the ferry terminal at Friday Harbor. 

This enchanting town exudes an old world charm, and bustles with activity along its waterfront.  It was previously a company town for the Roche Harbor Lime Company run by entrepreneur John McMillan. 

There are visible reminders of this rich history; including the lovely “Hotel de Haro” that accommodated visiting dignitaries such as President Theodore Roosevelt and President William Taft.  The formal gardens in front of the hotel are exquisite, and were originally designed by John McMillan’s wife.  Some other landmarks include the hillside chapel, the Banquet Court adjacent to the hotel, the 1886 General Store on the pier, and the McMillin Suites where John’s son previously lived (now converted into four luxury apartments).

Things to do at Roche Harbor

1. Stroll along the waterfront & gardens:  Visitors can stroll along the pier at the marina, or explore the exquisite formal gardens in front of the Hotel de Haro. 
2. See historic buildings: Admire historic buildings, such at the Hotel de Haro, hillside chapel, Banquet Court, McMillin Suites and General Store.
3. Get lunch or dinner:  Stop for a bite at the café near the General Store, or dine at the more upscale McMillan’s Dining Room. 
4. Visit the Saturday Market: During summer and early fall there is a Saturday Market just outside the general store. 
5. Visit the Sculpture Garden: A Sculpture Garden is only a 10-minute walk behind the Harbor, up the hill.

To get to Roche Harbor, take the Anacortes to Friday Harbor Ferry.  It's then a 25-minute drive up the island from Friday Harbor.  Or call 1 800 451 8910 for information about charter flights.

• There are three restaurants; McMillan’s Dining Room, Lime Kiln Café, and Madrona Bar and Grill
• Kayaking and whale watching tours can be booked at the resort. 
• A spa, tennis courts and swimming pool are also available at the resort.
• Cellphone coverage can be patchy on San Juan Island, therefore it's a good idea to print out directions before leaving.
