Newhalem
Newhalem is a small hydro-electric town at the start of the spectacular 74-mile North Cascades Scenic Highway. This scenic highway stretches from Newhalem to Winthrop through a mountain pass in the North Cascades National Park, and is considered one of the most spectacular drives in the US. Always check highway conditions before leaving, as the highway closes at certain times of the year.
Newhalem was first established in 1920, and its residents are employees of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project. Three dams were constructed along the Skagit River to provide additional power to Seattle.
