Mt Erie

At 1,273 feet, Mt Erie is the highest point on Fidalgo Island in Washington State, and offers the best views of the San Juan Islands. Fidalgo Island is easily accessible by bridge from the mainlandPlease note there's no camping at Mt Erie, dogs must be on a leash, and ATV’s are not permitted.

When driving up to the summit, you will notice a number of pedestrians along the roadThere are other trails that lead to the summit, but these are difficult to navigate without a mapMaps can be purchased at the Anacortes Visitor Center located at 819 Commercial Avenue, (360) 293-3832.

Directions to Mt Erie

Mt Erie is part of an 160-acre park, run by the city of Anacortes, and is located 5 minutes south of AnacortesJust travel south along Heart Lake Road from Anacortes, and then take the well marked turnoff to Erie Mountain driveIt’s then a 1.5 mile drive up a paved road to the summit at Mt Erie

Best views at the summit

After reaching the parking lot at the summit, you will immediately notice two viewing platforms, however these overlook an oil refinery and don't provide the best viewsThe best viewing platform is less visible, directly adjacent to the Radio Station, jutting out over an 1,000 foot rock face popular with rock climbersThis overlook provides incredible views south across Lake Campbell, towards Deception Pass and Whidbey Island.   Another great viewing platform is just a 5 minute walk back down the road, and provides beautiful views of the San Juan Islands and Burrows Bay.

Things to do near Mt Erie

After visiting Mt Erie, explore other attractions around Anacortes, including Washington Park and Cap Santa ParkTravel 20-minutes south to spectacular Deception Pass, and then cross the bridge to explore the charming townships of Coupeville and Langley on Whidbey Island.   Alternatively, travel 20 minutes south-east to the historic town of La Conner on the mainland, with lovely gift shops and galleries on the main street.

If you have more time, take the ferry from Anacortes to Orcas Island or San Juan Island.
