Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center

The “Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center” is located in stunning Cape Disappointment State Park on the WA Coast, and provides a fascinating overview of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, that ended at Cape Disappointment in 1806. 

The Interpretive Center has a dramatic cliff-top location, and provides great views of the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse from a viewing platform.  Visitors can also take a 25-minute hike out to the lighthouse, passing secluded Dead Man’s Cove along the way.

Another highlight of a visit to the Interpretive Center is Fort Canby, located at the base of the Center.   The series of underground rooms and tunnels inside this fortress was operational until the end of WWII, and has been well preserved for visitors.

  • Location:  Four miles west of Ilwaco at Cape Disappointment State Park
  • Lunch:  Try the seafood restaurants along the waterfront at Ilwaco.
  • Lodging:  Stay at nearby Long Beach or Astoria.   Campsites, cabins and yurts are available at Cape Disappointment.  Visitors can also rent the Lighthouse Keeper’s House.

    My wife and I spent the semumr of 2009 volunteering at the North Head Lighthouse. This park and the surrounding areas are the most beautiful we have ever visited. If you have the opportunity to visit or want to volunteer at one of the many sites that are available give them a call. You will not find a nicer and more people friendly person to talk to than Steven Woods the volunteer co-ordinator. If you are looking to spend one of the best semumrs at a great location, go to Cape Disappointment .
