Fort Columbia State Park
Fort Columbia State Park is located on the Washington State side of the Columbia River, just 15 minutes southeast of Long Beach.
This fort was constructed between 1896 and 1904 as a key strategic defense post near the entrance of the Columbia River. Its population swelled during WWI and WWII, when it functioned as a small town with a hospital, theater, firehouse and jail. Fort Columbia eventually became a State Park in 1950, five years after the conclusion of WWII.
The historic grounds have been well preserved, and include:
- Interpretive Center (at the barracks)
- Period Museum (at the Commanding Officer’s Quarters)
- Batteries Ord, Murphy, Crenshaw and 246
- Picnic facilities
The Intepretive Center and Period Museum are open July/August (and only weekends during September). Always call ahead to check opening hours, 360 777 8221.
There are also a series of hiking trails through lush coastal forest with views of the Columbia River, as well as secluded coves.
