Newberry Volcanic Monument
The Newberry Volcanic Monument is located in the Deschutes National Forest off Highway 97 in Central Oregon. The spectacular Newberry Crater is the highlight of a visit to the Volcanic Monument, formed when the center of the Newberry Volcano collapsed from a series of eruptions from 500,000 to 1,300 years ago. Much of this area is inaccessible during winter and early spring months, therefore please check road and weather conditions at the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Things to do at the Newberry Crater
The Newberry Crater is 1-hour south of Bend, off Highway 97:
- The first stop is the magnificent Paulina Falls on the western edge of the caldera, formed along a creek that flows from nearby Paulina Lake.
- Your next stop is Paulina Lake. The Paulina Lake Lodge has cabins, a restaurant and a general store, and is popular for boating and fishing for salmon and trout.
- You can then drive to the 7,984 foot Paulina Peak, for breathtaking views of Paulina Lake and East Lake from the highest point in the monument.
- The Obsidian Flow is next, and has a 1-mile trail through glassy black rocks of Obsidian from the most recent eruption of the Newberry Volcano 1,300 years ago.
- Your final stop is tranquil East Lake. The East Lake Resort is popular with fishing enthusiasts, and includes a Store and Tackle shop, Cafe, Expresso window, cabins, RV site, campsites and boat rentals (the resort is only open seasonally).
- After visiting the Newberry Crater, consider stopping for lunch at the small village of Sunriver.
Other things to do near the Newberry Crater
The Lava Lands Visitor Center, Lava Butte and Lava River Cave, are just 20-minutes south of Bend, on Highway 97:
- The Lava Lands Visitor Center has informative video presentations and exhibitions (check seasonal opening times for the Lava Lands Visitor Center).
- A short distance from the Visitor Center, ascend the winding road to the top of the 500-foot Lava Butte, and experience 360-degree views of the volcanic landscape from a fire lookout, or follow an interpretive trail around the rim of an 150-foot crater.
- The Lava River Cave is just 1-mile south of the Lava Lands Visitor Center, and is the largest Lava Tube in Oregon (check seasonal opening times for the Lava River Cave).
