Columbia River Maritime Museum
Travel 2-hours northwest of Portland to the impressive Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria. This is an excellent museum that will provide you with a deeper appreciation of the sheer force of the mighty Columbia River, and the acts of bravery from those who work on its waters.
An informative video introduces you to Astoria River Pilots, who risk their lives to help navigate ships through treacherous sandbars at the mouth of the Columbia River. The waters at the entrance of the Columbia River are considered amongst the most dangerous in the world. A map at the museum highlights hundreds of shipwrecks over the years. The museum also pays tribute to the US Coast Guard and their tremendous rescue efforts.
Outside the main building, walk along the dock to the floating lighthouse, the “Lightship Columbia” and experience life at sea for a crew member aboard these cramped quarters.
The Columbia River Maritime Museum is one of the best maritime museums in the United States, and well worth a visit.
