Flavel House Museum
Flavel House is located in the charming town of Astoria, at the mouth of the Columbia River in Oregon. This Queen Anne style mansion was built in 1884-1885 by Captain John Flavel, who made his fortune as a river bar pilot and entrepreneur on the Columbia River. It was also featured in the popular 1985 movie, “The Goonies”.
Visitors can explore the lower and upper floors of this 11,600 square foot house, and learn about the daily lives of a wealthy Victorian-era family, including Captain John Flavel’s wife Mary, and daughters Nellie and Katie. The interior woodwork, crown moldings and ornate fireplaces have been meticulously preserved, and are complemented by period furnishings. This grand house has 14-foot ceilings on the lower floor, and impressive rooms including the entrance hall, formal parlor, music room and library. The true highlight is the three story tower that Captain John Flavel used as an observation post for ships navigating the treacherous waters at the entrance of the Columbia River.
Tickets can be purchased at the adjacent Carriage House (corner of Exchange and 7th Street). Check opening times and admission fees at the Clatsop County Historical Society website, or call 503 325 2203 for more information.
