Crater Lake

Crater Lake in Central Oregon, is the deepest lake in the US, and rests inside a caldera when Mount Mazema collapsed during an eruption over 7,700 years ago. 

Crater Lake is five miles wide, and is surrounded by sheer cliffs up to 2,000-feet high.  A 33-mile road encircles the lake.  The northern approach is closed during winter and spring, but the Western Entrance to Crater Lake National Park is open all year.  See Crater Lake Road Conditions.

Things to do at Crater Lake’s “Rim Village”

The main tourist hub at Crater Lake is Rim Village, providing access to a number of attractions: 

• Steel Visitor Center Park Headquarters   (open all year)
• Crater Lake Lodge   (late-May thru mid-October)
• Rim Visitor Center   (late-May thru September)
• Crater Lake Boat Tours   (July thru mid-September).  Strenuous 2.2-mile hike.
• Trolley Tours around the lake   (July to Labor Day Weekend)

Crater Lake Boat Tours and Trolley Tours are only available to visitors during summer.

Lodging, cabins & camping at Crater Lake

There are three accommodation options at Crater Lake, and only Crater Lake Lodge is on the lake:

• Crater Lake Lodge - Rim Village
• The Cabins at Mazama Village
• Crater Lake Campground - Mazama Village 

Accommodation bookings can be made here.  If everything is booked out at Crater Lake Park, you will need to travel an hour south to Klamath Falls.
