Cascades Lakes

The “Cascades Lakes Scenic Byway” is located off highway 97, just outside Bend, and has some of the most pristine alpine lakes in Oregon. 

Things to see along the Cascades Lakes Byway

The Cascades Lakes loop starts at Mount Bachelor, and then winds its way around Devils Lake, Elk Lake, Hosmer Lake and Lava Lake. Key sights are outlined below. Much of this area is inaccessible during winter and early spring months: 

1. Devils Lake has clear, shallow emerald waters.  It’s the perfect stop for a photo opportunity.
2. Elk Lake is significantly bigger, and has spectacular views of Mt Bachelor across the lake.  It’s a charming destination, with log cabins scattered around the lake, and the historic Elk Lake Guard Station built in 1929.  Stop by “Elk Lake Resort” for lunch on the outdoor deck in summer, and soak up the peaceful atmosphere.  There are also boat rentals (kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards), cabin rentals, and camping grounds.  In winter the resort can only by accessed by snow cat or cross-country skiing.
3. Hosmer Lake is popular with sports fisherman, and is stocked with Atlantic Salmon.  You can access this lake at the turn-off to the boat ramp.
4. Lava Lake is also popular with sports fisherman, and you can rent a boat or kayak at the “Lava Lake Lodge”.  The lodge has a general store, RV Park and campground, but is closed certain times of the year.

Camping, cabins, lodging at Cascades Lakes

Camp at either Elk Lake Resort or Lava Lake Lodge, or rent a cabin at Elk Lake.  If you’d prefer to stay in a town, consider Bend Oregon or Sunriver.

Travel 40 minutes east of Cascade Lakes to visit the amazing Newberry Volcanic Monument | Highway 97.
